When I think of God of War, I think hero vs. monsters. My background as a comic book artist includes a lot of superhero mythology. When I started sketching roughs for this print, my first idea was Kratos as a comic book superhero like Thor or Hercules. Kratos’ design and weapons seemed like a perfect comic book fit.

Since I was working with the first God of War game, I treated the comic book elements like the old, licensed comics I grew up reading. These included things like Godzilla and Shogun Warriors. Those old comics did a good job communicating dynamic action and making the heroes and their enemies larger than life.
The Hydra’s scale fit this concept perfectly within this method of design! Once we had a concept we liked, it was just a matter of translating the God of War designs into a comic book superhero vernacular.
